Myspace, Facebook, Flickrthey're more than websites. They're online communitiesplaces to share content and information, and places that grow and evolve–just like the neighborhood you live in. Communities like these are also the leading lights of a new generation of Web applications broadly known as Web 2.0.
Originally coined by industry expert Tim O'Reilly in a brainstorming session between O'Reilly and MediaLive International, the term Web 2.0 has become a marketing buzzword–but that shouldn't take away from the fact that Web 2.0 as a concept is new, innovative and often incredibly useful.
At its core, Web 2.0 is really all about interactivity. Whether you're sharing photos online with Flickr, creating a personal radio station on Last.fm, publishing a blog with WordPress or connecting with your friends and family on Facebook, Web 2.0 is defined by web applications that let you interact with people or information, rather than the simple publish-and-consume experience that defined the first generation of Web applications.
The incredible hype around Web 2.0 has swept Web users up in a hurricane of excitement. With a number of extremely successful businesses having been built around Web 2.0 applicationsmultimillion dollar buyouts of Myspace, Writely and others includedWeb pundits would have us believe that almost any application we use on the desktop might be better used on the Web. Could this be true? Until Web access becomes truly ubiquitousavailable literally anytime and anywhere, Web 2.0 applications won't be able to do everything we've come to expect from our PCs. Corel ®WordPerfect Lightning Product Manager Jay Larock has an interesting blog on the subject of Web 2.0 vs. the desktop at the WordPerfect Lightning Community at www.wordperfect.com/lightning/community.
But regardless of when Web 2.0 comes to dominate our computing experience, one thing is trueWeb 2.0 applications are here today and they're often free and easy to enjoy. The best approach to discovering Web 2.0 is to get out there and try it for yourself. But bewareyou may find yourself even more addicted to the Web than you were before!

Challenge our experts with your toughest Corel WordPerfect Office questions
In every issue we answer one of your most intriguing questions. Here's this month's query:
Question:
I am always typing my return address or inserting my company logo from a graphics file. Is there a way to make this quick and easy?
Answer:
WordPerfect Office X3 provides QuickWords. QuickWords are a quick and easy way to insert commonly used items into your document. Some examples of typical QuickWords are signature blocks, company logos, return addresses and much, much more!
Creating a QuickWord for commonly used text / images:
- Create your text, or insert your picture in Corel® WordPerfect®.
- Using your mouse, select the text/picture.
- In WordPerfect, click Tools, QuickCorrect.
- If you don't see QuickCorrect under tools, click Tools, WorkSpace Manager and select "WordPerfect Mode," then click Ok.
- In QuickWords, In the field labeled "Abbreviated form (Type this QuickWord in a document)," type the name you want to use for your QuickWord. This should be a name which you won't accidentally type. Some people begin their names with a "\" character to ensure they don't accidentally type it.
- Click the Create button.
- Near the bottom of this window, ensure there is a checkmark in the "Expand QuickWords when you type them."
- Click Ok.
- To test the new QuickWord, type the word you entered in step 5 and press the space bar on your keyboard.
