Corel Painter IX
Putting Your Best Stroke Forward
by John Derry

Whenever I finish a new image I tend to compare it to my earlier work. If I judge the image to be successful, I categorize it as one of my better works. This scale of success implies personal creative growth over many images.

This got me to thinking about how we, as artists, make a commitment to our efforts before, during, and after we create artwork. Where does this sense of commitment come from? How do we utilize it as we create a piece? Read the full story >>

Creating brushed, stamped metal with Corel Painter
By Cher Threinen-Pendarvis

With Painter's Bevel World dynamic layer, you can try an incredible variety of custom bevels on a selected layer-quickly and without the need for time-consuming masks and channels. In this tutorial, I create a brushed and stamped metal graphic, applying effects that include custom lighting, texture, an intricate bevel, and a cast shadow. Find out more >>

Using the frames-per-second control with animation
Frame rate, which describes the number of image frames displayed per second (fps), determines how smooth the motion appears. This doesn't necessarily mean that what you specify as the frame rate is what you'll experience. Factors such as frame size, compression method, and computer speed can prevent some movies from achieving their set rate. Find out more >>

Adjusting the fringe on digital watercolor
You can use Digital Watercolor brushes in Corel Painter IX to create effects similar to those produced with Watercolor brushes-without the need to create a separate layer. Settings such as Diffusion, Opacity, and Wet Fringe control the appearance of the stroke. Learn more >>

Karen Sperling's Q&A
Each month, Painter expert Karen Sperling answers a question from one of our Painter Canvas readers. Here's June's question.

Question:
It's easy to accumulate lots of layers in Painter. Whether you're creating artwork from scratch or adding painterly touches to photos, layers provide the flexibility to experiment with everything from color to composition. This easy proliferation of layers raises a question almost immediately: "How can I expand my Layers palette to see more layers?"

Answer:
Here's a little-known method for expanding the Layers palette. Find out more >>
