All Things Painter
by John Derry

Welcome Painter aficionados, to the inaugural issue of the Corel® Painter™ Canvas! I'm honored and pleased to be a part of this new chapter in Painter's evolution. Like me, many of you have been Painter fanatics for years. For some of you, this is a recent undertaking. Painter's evolution has brought us all here on a new journey down the creative highway known as IX. This is the place for All Things Painter. I'm here to act as your guide, to help point you in the right direction.

When I was involved in the early development of Painter, I never could have imagined just how varied and widespread its application would become. What makes Corel Painter so versatile? In a word: expression. Because of its countless expressive capabilities, Corel Painter has taken a strong hold in many professional environments: concept art, print illustration, interactive game design, commercial animation, industrial design, medical illustration, and the list goes on.

The Corel Painter IX development team has worked closely with you, the Painter community, to ensure that Corel Painter IX faithfully captures each expressive gesture by the artist. This respect for the artist's gestures is a hallmark of Corel Painter's unique ability to simulate traditional media.

It's no coincidence that the tag line for Corel Painter IX is “Made by Hand,” or that its icon is a loosely sketched hand with nine fingers. This image is particularly fitting for artists on the analog side of the expressive mark-making tracks. Traditionally learned art skills translate quickly and effortlessly through Painter and onto the monitor. Corel Painter IX lets artists be artists and allows their natural styles to show through their work without imposing a “look. ”

The first time I painted a stroke with the new Artists' Oils, I thought, “This brush has a definite look to it.” Yes, an individual stroke or two does say "Artist's Oils!"—but in the buildup of many strokes, magic begins to happen. Play with Artists' Oils for a few minutes, and I guarantee that you'll be drooling with delight. Once you get your tongue back in your head, your creative duty is to master and tame this amazing new medium.

One purpose of this column is to offer inspiration to get your creative juices flowing. I'll look into the issues affecting digital artists today, highlight various tools, focus on specific applications, and give up a few inside tricks, as well as keep you off guard with my rapier-like wit. ;-)

If you're wondering where to start, there are plenty of excellent resources available to you. Longtime Painter gurus Cher Threinen-Pendarvis, Karen Sperling, and Jeremy Sutton all offer exceptional Painter-specific learning opportunities. In addition, there are several online forums that focus exclusively on Painter. And, if you're reading this, then you obviously know about the Corel Painter IX newsletter and its associated Web site!

I hope you'll stay tuned to this column as we journey down Highway IX and explore All Things Painter. Until next time, enjoy the ride, and give Corel Painter IX a spin!
