How long have you been in this profession?
I've been a professional image-maker for 30 years. I'm genetically predisposed to it, I guess. I was accepted to University level art classes while still in elementary school and kept after my studies to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree after high school.
Why did you choose this profession/ How did you get started?
In 1973, while a Senior in a BFA program, I was selected as one of the top ten creative college students in America by Condé Nast Publications. This led to immediate access to the highest rungs of the fashion industry and the beginnings of a fascinating career behind the lens.
What are your most important accomplishments?
Finding a lovely partner who is equally dedicated to the visual arts and helping her raise two beautiful, kind, and resourceful daughters. Beyond that, I was pleased to be inducted into the DGA (Directors Guild of America) and, over the course of my twenty-year career in Hollywood, earn numerous accolades in the most important industry competitions.
Describe a special moment in your career.
Since retirement from the film industry, I have been particularly pleased to receive acknowledgement for my Photo-Impressionism® portfolios created in Painter. These include a Kodak Professional Innovators Award, an Artist-in Residency at the Eiteljorg Museum of Western Art in conjunction with an Ansel Adams Retrospective, and numerous first place awards in juried competitions. Now I'm pleased to be able to have the time to offer workshops and tutorials to other explorers of the emerging arts.
How long have you used Painter?
Five years ago, I was given a brief introduction to Painter by my wife, Maura Dutra, and immediately found delight. Here, at last, was a technological tool that encouraged creativity, spontaneity, and precision.
Why did you choose Painter?
Compared to paint, pixels dry really, really fast. Seriously, though, the speed of Painter has allowed me to evolve my style much faster than would have been possible if I was working in natural media. I think one could spend a lifetime exploring this program's potential and never become bored. I truly feel I've only scratched the surface.
Do you have any interesting/funny/noteworthy stories?
I find the looks on the faces of natural-media artists when they see their first "Painter Original" to be quite interesting, funny, and noteworthy. I know I always enjoy it.
What are your top 5 favorite Painter features?
I discover new a feature to love every time I fire-up the program.
What are the Painter features that allow you to distinguish your art?
All the features are compelling. I'm definitely quite fond of the cloning features and the new Artists' Oils. By loosely cloning - then abstracting freely - I can elegantly evolve the information that I captured photographically into the impression that I felt within my heart. This blending of the factuality of photography with the Impressionists' emotional palette gave us Photo Impressionism® - our recognizable and trade-marked style.
