Using the Quick Clone effect in Corel® Painter™ IX
By Sean Young

When you use the Quick Clone effect in Corel® Painter™ IX, you can immediately start creating impressive artwork from a digital image. The Quick Clone effect automatically sets up everything you need to clone an image.

To use Quick Clone
  1. Open the source image that you would like to clone.

You can apply the Quick Clone effect to any digital image.

  2. Choose File menu > Quick Clone.

  3. Start painting on the cloned image. (Use a broad brush size for painting background imagery and a small brush size for painting foreground imagery.)

The Quick Clone effect creates a duplicate version of your source image with tracing paper over it.

Note: The Cloners brush category is automatically selected when you use the Quick Clone effect. Experiment with different brush variants in the Cloners brush category to achieve the desired effect. Remember that you can adjust brush size and opacity as you paint.

While you paint on the cloned image, the handy Tracing Paper feature lets you check your work.

You can use the Tracing Paper icon to toggle tracing paper on and off.

To check your work by using Tracing Paper
  • Click the Tracing Paper icon in the vertical scroll bar.

    Or

  • Choose Canvas menu > Tracing Paper.

    Or

  • Press Command + T (Mac OS) or Control + T (Windows).

Note: These actions toggle the Tracing Paper feature on and off.

You can turn almost any brush into a cloner with the Clone Color button. The Clone Color button causes a brush to pick up color from the source image while staying true to its own stroke nature.

    To use Clone Color
    1. Choose Window menu > Show Colors to display the Colors palette.
If the Colors palette is not expanded, click the palette arrow.
    2. Click the Clone Color button .
The color wheel on the Color palette dims.

Note: While cloning, if you change to brushes that are not Cloner brushes, you must re-click the Clone Color button. This setting will be remembered for each variant.
