Achieving a feeling of speed with the Zoom Blur
by Cher Threinen-Pendarvis

You can achieve a feeling of speed with the Zoom Blur feature in Painter that rivals the results that you can achieve when panning with a zoom lens. For Jump, I used the Zoom Blur to add to the excitement and illusion of speed during the skateboarder's jump.

  1. Posterizing the image. Open a color photo. To achieve a bright graphic look, I posterized the image. Choose Effects, Tonal Control, Posterize. In the dialog box choose between 6-8 levels.

  2. Copying the image. Now choose Select, All (Ctrl/1-A). Choose the Layer Adjuster and Alt/Option-click on the image. This creates a layer with an exact copy of the original image.

  3. Blurring the layer. Select the layer by clicking on its name in the Layers palette and choose Effects, Focus, Zoom Blur. To get a moderate blur on the 1600-pixel-wide image, I set the Amount to 12%. Now set the focal point of the zoom by clicking in the image (not in the Preview window). I clicked on the skateboarder's forehead. If you'd like to create a more distorted effect of zooming in, check the Zoom In box. (I left it unchecked for this image.) Click OK.

  4. Painting on the mask. To enhance the focal point of the image, I painted areas of a layer mask to reveal the underlying image, for instance, the head, hands and portions of his feet. Select the layer in the Layers palette and add a layer mask by clicking the Create Layer Mask button on the Layers palette. Click on the layer mask thumbnail to select it—you'll see a dark outline around it when it is active. In the Brush Selector Bar, choose a Fine Tip Soft Air variant of Airbrushes and choose black in the Colors picker. (To view the layer imagery while editing the layer mask, keep the layer mask eye icon shut in the Channels palette.) I painted into the layer mask on the head, hands and feet to reveal the unblurred, posterized image on the Canvas.
